About me

I’m an editor, project manager and digital strategy consultant based in Washington, D.C., with more than two decades of experience in producing science news for specific audiences.

I specialize in wrangling complex projects, from the planning and launch of CASW Connector and the redesign and replatforming of the Science News website to managing and executing interactive stories, like the award-winning “The Martian Diaries” and “Fatal Fix: How an opioid overdose shuts down your body.” A frequent presenter and facilitator, I give talks and workshops on topics ranging from measuring success to product-thinking and working together as a team.

As the part-time managing editor of CASW Connector, a library of science writing resources hosted by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, I gather and curate articles, videos, workshops and more from around the internet, and plan and host periodic webinars on topics of interest to the science writing community.

Before launching my editing and consulting business, I served as digital director at Science News magazine, a contributing editor for Science Careers, and news editor at the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. I’m an alumna of the Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media. Work I’ve edited, produced or managed has been honored with Ozzie Awards, an Online Journalism Award and several association awards.

At Science News, I oversaw editorial website operations, from daily programming and special projects to product strategy. I managed a creative team of digital editors who wrote, created, edited and/or produced content for web, social media, video and newsletters. And I led strategy efforts for audience and content development for digital platforms and SEO.

As an editor for Science Careers, I coordinated freelance-written coverage of north Europe, including policy and workforce issues in science, non-traditional careers, and profiles. I also served as editor of a grant-funded portal for careers in clinical and translational medicine. And at the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, I oversaw the largely freelance-written news section, commissioning stories, reviewing pitches, cultivating writers and editing stories.

I serve as the coordinator for the National Association of Science Writers’ Science in Society Journalism Awards, and am a frequent screener for the Online Journalism Awards. I’m a member of NASW and the Online News Association, am an active participant in the News Product Alliance community, and was on a planning committee that launched the DEI Coalition For Anti-Racist, Equitable, And Just Newsrooms.

I wrote an invited chapter on measuring success for A Tactical Guide to Science Journalism, published in May 2022 by Oxford University Press, and am coauthor of a guide to building a product team, published by the News Product Alliance.
