Hi! I’m Kate.

I’m a journalist who is passionate about science and its role for an informed public, creating news and products to serve specific audiences, connecting people and resources, and ensuring newsrooms are spaces for creativity and joy alongside their mission-driven work.

With more than two decades in science journalism, I have extensive experience in digital strategy, newsroom management, web best practices, audience engagement, analytics, social media platforms, content management systems and project management.

I’m the author of the chapter on measuring success in science journalism in A Tactical Guide to Science Journalism (Oxford University Press, 2022), and coauthor of a guide for the News Product Alliance on how to build a product team for scratch. I’ve given presentations on product thinking at the National Association of Science Writers annual meeting and the News Product Alliance Summit, and facilitated workshops on newsroom practices and team building.

When I’m not doing any of those things, I’m on my bike riding a rail trail (like the Pine Creek Trail in Pennsylvania pictured above), visiting a craft brewery, or sewing a quilt (or more likely, thinking about sewing a quilt).

This used to be a blog. There wasn’t much worth reading, but two favorite posts include how I broke the story of the discovery of the Higgs boson, and a column I wrote on a goal-setting activity using playground equipment as inspiration.
